Morgan: Metal Detective
(2023)

My roles: Art director, environment artist, level designer, 3D artist

I have been directing the artistic creation of this game since January 2023. The idea for this game was created by Harvey Hayman and myself in which we wanted to create an explorative open-world game similar to Firewatch and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, drawing visual references from Ooblets and Untitled Goose Game.

Early on, I wrote an art direction document detailing how this game will blend 2D character sprites in a 3D environment using flat shading, gradients, and patterns to combine the styles together in a natural-looking way. This document, along with an asset breakdown, was shared with collaborators and continually referred back to, to ensure a consistency between the 2D and 3D work we were comissioning from out-sourced artists.

In terms of 3D assets, I have been creating the hero assets for this game, whilst also working closely with a 3D artist who has been creating various smaller assets for the island. We have been working directly from the asset breakdown spreadsheet I created at the beginning of the project; the artist has been working through some of the modular assets I’ve assigned to them.

Assets I have created include: fishing boat, ligthhouse, church, standing stones, metal detector, walkman, polaroid.

Here is a look at the fictional Cornish island of Glasden, that I created for Morgan: Metal Detective.

The island is split up into diverse biomes, showcasing varied foliage and landmarks native to Cornwall.  It was important to create a natural sense of direction for the player when  exploreing the island, so I have used particular buildings to guide players to points of interest on the island.

To continue the blend of 3D and 2D elements, I created the majority of foliage using alphas as billboards in combination with a wind shader that I programmed to make the assets appear less static.
