Cauldron Brew
(2022)

My roles: Solo Indie Dev

I created this cosy coffee shop simulator as a solo project, wrapped up in a witchy aesthetic. It’s very much a take on my love of cute games. In Cauldron Brew, you meet new woodland creatures with cryptic drink orders, forage ingredients from the woods, unlock coffee ingredients and create different drink combinations to fulfil their requests.

I enjoyed creating my own visual style for this particular game. It took a while in the first couple of weeks to draw several iterations of objects in order to work out which style I preferred best and was most feasible to produce a large number of assets. I settled on a style that accentuates the curved lines within an object to give it a rounded and light feel, also highlighted through the feathered outline and grain overlay. Once I got into the swing of it, this style proved to be easily replicable for all of the other assets.

As I had not worked in 2D before, one of the challenges I faced quite early on was working with the layering system within Unity. By the end of development I had set up different layer groups with a structure to the layer orders. Despite this, I would still come across issues with overlapping assets or unpressable buttons but could be quickly fixed by changing the order number or turning off panel raycasting.
